On 17 August 1982, Ruth First, the wife of activist Joe Slovo, was killed in Mozambique by a letter bomb sent by Williamson. Ruth First had met Joe Slovo in 1948 while Slovo was studying law. Both were members of the banned Communist Party. They married the following year. Ruth had travelled extensively, visiting Prague, Dubrovnik and Moscow for youth congresses and other conferences. Because of their communist sympathies both Joe and Ruth were arrested in 1956 on charges of treason but the charges were dropped in 1958. Following the banning of the ANC after Sharpeville in 1960, Joe left South Africa in 1962 for exile in the United Kingdom. Ruth joined him there and played an active role in supporting the ANC, the Communist Party and the anti-apartheid movement. She taught at various universities in the UK before taking up the position of Director of Research at the Centre for African Studies at the Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo, Mozambique, in 1978.
